Course Objectives

  • Discuss the patient health risks and infection control challenges that improperly maintained dental unit waterlines pose if a safe water quality program is not implemented in the dental practice setting.  
  • Explain the CDC’s involvement with the dental waterline contamination outbreak that occurred in Anaheim, California in 2016. Review their findings that confirmed mycobacterium infections in 71 dental patients.
  • Review legislative measures that the FDA, various state governments and state dental boards are implementing to ensure that dental providers are adhering to the CDC Recommendations and the EPA’s regulatory standard for dental unit water quality. 
  • Describe the etiology and lifecycle of biofilm in dental unit waterlines. Classify the different stages of planktonic and sessile bacteria as it relates to the formation of biofilm.
  • Summarize the CDC’s key recommendations and their standard of care for dental unit water quality for the dental practice setting.
  • List proven protocol methods for dental unit waterline management based on national dental water lab testing results that meet the EPA’s regulatory standards for safe dental unit water quality.
